I rushed back to mention the 25 imported EE L-class electric locos, and
found that someone else has remembered.
Of the various classes mentioned, most were built by EE (UK and
Brisbane); SAR had several homebuilts with EE prime movers (the 900s - I
think the same prime mover as your 40; the 500s). The SAR 800s, TGR Ys,
and Midland Railway of Western Australia and WAGR Fs & Gs had a lot in
common with your 20s.

The question should also have been posted to
misc.transport.rail.australia-nz, to pick up the NZ EEs. About five
Di-class locos were built in Brisbane, with much in common with the QR
1600s or 1620s.
