Notting Hill Gate station was extensively reconstructed in the
1950s/60s as the original station was severely bombed. I doubt that
the escalators existed before the war as the old Central Line station
would have had lifts and the Circle Line/District platforms are only
just below street level. I'm sure that the escalators were installed
as part of the reconstruction.
