No-one should forget that if it had not been for the efforts of the SGR, the
Cranbourne to Leongatha line would have been fairly rapidly dismantled (as
was the case with the outer section of line to Barry Beach. Who knows - with
the advent of Freight Australia, this line could have remained open as a
useful freight route. Anyone who begrudges the cost of rebuilding the
Cranbourne to Leongatha line should note that the Victorian taxpayer has been
forced to pick up the increased cost of pavement repair to the South
Gippsland Highway since the freight service ended in 1992.

These costs make the railway project look like petty cash.
