It took over 100km to stop it and there was no safeguards along the way, such
as catch points or signal trips, that could have been used???  Instead they
had to do a scene out of a spaghetti western and have a driver run along
(presumably) the roof to stop it.

OK, catch points probably wouldn't be a good idea for a train carrying HAZMAT.
