Bracks bids for high-tech bonanza

Victorian Premier Steve Bracks is to announce today the reopening of four
country passenger train lines closed by the former Kennett government.

Melbourne radio station 3AW said money would be allocated in next week's
state budget to restore passenger services to Mildura, Bairnsdale, Leongatha
and Ararat.

Mr Bracks and Transport Minister Peter Batchelor were due to make the
announcement in Ararat in western Victoria today.

Services to the four regional centres were cut by the previous Kennett
government.

Three of the towns are in electorates now held by the state's three
independents - Mildura's Russell Savage, East Gippsland's Craig Ingram, and
West Gippsland's Susan Davies.

It is expected the passenger services would be restored to the Bairnsdale,
Leongatha and Ararat lines in the next financial year.
