[OT] The empire that was - Russia (or: Colour photos from B&W)



For those interested in photography, there's a few pages on the US
Library of Congress site that detail the procedure used by Sergei
Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii to photograph the Russian empire between
1909 and 1915.
The interesting part is that he used some cleverly thought out filtering
to be able to end up with projections (and now with digital technology,
reproductions) in colour, from three B&W plates.
