3: TECHNOLOGY UNLEASHED: WIRELESS INTERNET DEVICES ENTER THE HOME
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
As computers become commonplace in many American homes, hardware gadgets and software accessories are making wish lists everywhere. One such gadget, which the whole family can enjoy, is a new, wireless Internet appliance that allows you to surf the net and receive and send mail from anywhere in your home or yard.

Tired of surfing the Web in the one room where the family computer is stationed? The Internet Pads appliance bring the Web where you want it in your home: in the kitchen exploring recipes, in the living room checking sports reports, at the desk researching homework assignments.

Typically weighing less than 3 pounds, the pad is a portable Internet device about the size of a piece of paper with a rechargeable lithium battery that lasts up to several hours. It provides access up to several hundred feet away from a base station, essentially anywhere in the home or yard, and allows you to read and send e-mail as well as download attachments. In addition, they feature full-color touch screen and a virtual keyboard, sometimes allowing you to attach a traditional keyboard if you prefer. Using a high-speed broadband connection, the unit is up to 75 times faster than traditional dial-up Internet access.

A recent survey underscored the growing importance of Internet access and found that 81% of Americans disagreed with the statement 'Nobody really needs the Internet at home.' In addition, 61% said the Internet was so useful it was hard to live without it. The survey showed that Americans envision using these devices everywhere -- from the family room to the bedroom to the yard.

One of the best features of this innovation is that the wireless technology can support multiple users. Multiple pads can work simultaneously off one base station, making it an addition the whole family can enjoy at the same time. For some families, the true benefit may be no more fighting about whose turn it is to use the computer!

4: FUN AND GAMES: TECH TOYS FOR NEW GRADS THIS SPRING
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Every year, many young adults graduate from high school or college and take a significant step toward their future. According to the U.S. Department of Education, there will be 2,837,000 high school graduates in 2001, and the National Center for Education Statistics Projections through 2009 estimates there will be 2,230,900 college graduates this year.

'Family and friends are likely to send grads off to college or into the work force with gifts that will help them succeed,' says Laurie Bauer, spokesperson for Best Buy, the nation's largest retailer of consumer electronics, personal computers, entertainment software and appliances. 'Technology plays an important part in a grad's continued success and many new technology products can help to make work time more efficient and free time more fun.'

Whether your grad is heading to college or into the workforce, keeping organized is key. The personal digital assistants (PDAs), which now retail for under $100, is just the thing to keep your grad on top of things. Internet capabilities, a date book, to-do list and note pad functions, your grad will have everything needed to work smarter. The price increases with more advanced models, but the added price is often worth the benefits.

Graduation is a special time of new beginnings and friends. Your grad can capture the memories on a new digital camera. With no film to develop, your grad can preview pictures immediately and adjust settings for the perfect shot. Some also offer a video mode for MPEG movies. Images and movies can be transferred to a computer for storage or e-mailed to friends and family. Prices range from tens to thousands depending on the quality, features, and size camera you want. Be sure to pick one up that is capable of at least 1024x768 quality pictures, or in 5 years you’ll be wondering just how in the heck you thought that nasty, grainy image ever looked like the real thing.

If your grad just landed a job that requires travel, the a portable DVD player or MP3 player make travel time more fun. Portable DVD players can still be pricey, but have come down considerable from their original prices, and they can really make long plane trips seem much shorter. If your grad doesn't want to pack CDs for the trip, a portable MP3 player may be the answer. Price varies depending on storage capacity and features. Storage can range from several hours of music to literally thousands of songs. They can also be used to listen to audio books and other materials stored in MP3 format.

A grad's time should not be all work and no play. Game consoles have become increasingly popular as the Grad that used to own an original Nintendo heads off into the world. Technology advances at a dizzying rate, but the good news is that you can often purchase just slightly older technology at bargain rates. Quality consoles can be had for under $100, with the latest, cutting edge systems ranging from $200 and up. Games will cost upwards of $50 or more each, but advances in CD technologies mean that game magazines will often contain playable demos for these systems. Instead of shelling out sixty bucks for a game your Grad won’t like, buy them several magazines with demo disks (about $5 each) and a gift certificate so they can buy their favorite.

You are sure to start your grad out on the right foot with technology products that make his/her work time more productive and free time more fun.
