The following paragraphs appeared towards the end of today's Sun-Herald's
editorial titled "Mr Howard, your voters are shouting":

One option would be to freeze the excise now, waiving the indexation rise due
in August - almost certain to infuriate motorists just two months out from the
most commonly predicted date of a Federal election.

Another would be to heed the advice of its backbenchers and get tough with oil
companies over pricing fluctuations between city and country areas.  The
suggestion of Federal Liberal MP Gary Nairn to impose a public transport levy
in cities to fund a reduction in the excise duty in the country is also worth
considering.
