In Melbourne they have roaming cleaners that do the job for several
stations..
the tickets are sold by a pleasant machine that doesn't look like you have
interupted a special moment for it and you go to the toilet at the premium
stations if you need to. Or use the facilities somewhere before or after you
get on the train.

I used to think the same way, but after seeing the system in Melbourne, its
not perfect, but its functional.. the tickets are sold by a machine (so they
at least know where you are going), and the next train is announced by a
person in a small green box on the wall.. who doesn't have to pretend to
smile if they are having a bad day..

You are in the minority of staff who do give a rats.. cos most station staff
DON'T care.
They're jobs are safe - they work for the Government..

Privatise it and see what happens to the customer service staff.. they will
actually do that, "Service for the customer"

These views are made in private as well, and are sure to attract some
attention from rail employees.
The easiest way to protect your job from comments like these, is to do the
job properly.
