You really should try it on a packed St Kilda Rd tram in peak hour.  You'll
find the validators aren't directly opposite the door, particularly if you
board at the front.

You'll find too that people aren't prepared to fight their way through crowds
in 35 degree heat just to keep a bunch of bureaucrats happy.
