New $5 notes not accepted by vending machines

Source: AAP|Published: Monday January 8, 5:23 PM

The new $5 notes issued by the Reserve Bank of Australia are causing headaches
for some Melbourne commuters.

It appears bill-validating software used in public transport ticket vending
machines, poker machines, change machines and note-based parking machines
cannot accept the new note.

And operators of Melbourne's trains, trams and buses say the problem with
their ticket vending machines can't be fixed until February 1.

Connex Trains, Yarra Trams, Bayside Trains and Swanston Trams say the Reserve
Bank only provided the company that developed the bill validating software
with sample notes for testing just before Christmas.

They're urging passengers to use their old $5 notes -- those with Queen
ELIZABETH'S portrait on them -- when getting tickets from machines, or buy
them from a Metcard agent until next month.

They say staff at major railway stations will also swap the new $5 notes for
customers wanting to buy tickets from the ticket machines.
