I suspect you saw the ex-NZR 'Silver Star' cars. The 'Silver Star' was
an overnight
sleeper train which ran between Auckland and Wellington. The cars were
sold to Thailand.
Some were converted into the Thai Royal Train, and the others into a
luxury train running a service similar to the VSOE. (They would have
needed a lot of conversion as the Silver Star was a load of rubbish
when I rode it in the late 1970s)
