A dynamometer is an apparatus for measuring force or power. In railway
terms, the dynamometer car is usually marshalled immediately behind the
locomotive(s), and measures the drawbar force which the locomotive produces.
Usually done for testing new locos, or re-engined ones, it is the only
practical way of measuring the usable power output of the loco.
