Carr to ram through rail freight sale

The Premier is set to ram the sale of FreightCorp through a
Labor Caucus meeting tomorrow amid widespread opposition from
Left MPs who have sworn to fight the sell-off.

And today, State Treasury officials and unionists will meet the
Federal Finance Minister, Mr Fahey, to push for the sale of half
of FreightCorp to a private road operator. They want this new
public-private joint venture to then bid to take over the
National Rail Corp.

State Cabinet has already agreed to a sale - its first
privatisation move since it abandoned selling the power industry
in 1998. But it is not clear whether the Government wants to
sell all or part of FreightCorp.
