A couple of points here:
Firstly, loaded coal trains in the Hunter rarely run faster than about
40-50km/h, or at least that's the fastest I've seen them, even going down
the hill from Thornton to Beresfield.

Secondly, having seen the Beresfield crash wreckage after the event, if
those 2 trains had hit at 60km/h then a lot more damage would have been
done. For a start, there was a road bridge not far from the wreckage, which
was untouched. That's apart from the fact that jumping from a train cab
onto train tracks at 60km/h would do some serious damage to the people as
well, whereas they walked away with bruises and scratches. One rumour I
heard flying around at the time was that if the drivers had stayed in the
cab, they wouldn't have been any worse off than by jumping, so I think that
60km/h is a bit optimistic for how fast they hit.

Finally, for anyone who's interested, I've got photos of that accident taken
that afternoon, while everything was still in place.
