Hahahaha.

It's more likely to be an attempt to find out how many people are really
using the trains, to compare that with ticket validations, for revenue
sharing purposes.

One assumes exercises like this are also being done on the trams? The
ratio of passengers to validated tickets on them must be fairly askew
and costing the operating companies a heap.
