Re: Engineering association response to the federal budget

The best engineer I have come across in my work was a german who originally did
his trade in fitting and machining, then a drafting certificate, then a degree
in mechanical engineering, and ending up with a doctorate. All Australian
universities pay little attention to drafting, and trade skills and
manufacturing techniques (I recall 3 hrs a week for 16 weeks for each).
Engineers who were originally draftsman are also very well regarded by employers
for design an management positions (here and overseas). Before undertaking a
engineering degree it should be compulsory to do a 2 year TAFE certificate in
detail drafting or Associate diploma in Engineering. Kinda like medical doctors
have to do a science course before undertaking medicine. That way you weed out
the unsuitable types.
