I noticed on Tuesday morning that the Tilt Train test track was rather
rusty.

STN 400 had a scheduled 6.30 pm (Run S1-C) from Eveleigh to Sydney (Steam
Platforms), shown on one page as "via Engine Dive" and on another as "via
______ Dive" as if there had been a late alteration. The normal alternative
route from Eveleigh to Sydney (Steam Platforms) is via the Down Illawarra
Dive.

It happened that a defective suburban train had been diverted into
Eveleigh - I saw two cars being shunted around at about 7.15. This
congestion might explain why a train would be sent out via Platform 10.
(There is yet another exit from Eveleigh - via Erskineville Junction.)

Until the re-arrangement of junctions for the Airport line, it was quite
normal for inbound empty electric trains to depart Redfern platform 10 (Down
Illawarra Line) in the up direction and cross over to the Up Illawarra at
635 points, the crossover provided for trains departing from the Wells
Street neck.

Maybe the driver's road knowledge was entirely correct for the year 1995?
