Whilst Ingliston Bank may have been a factor in deciding where to put the
Melb-Adelaide standard gauge it wasn't "the reason" it went through Cressy.
Geelong, with its port and industry base would have been a bigger factor.
The Ballarat line follows a rather curious alignment for much of its length
thus a train can get to Ararat quicker via Cressy than via Ballarat. In any
case, the new line still has sections of 1 in 50.
