I dispute that from personal experience. When you go to the Civic bus
interchange in Canberra and there are 8 different buses to Belconnen
by 5 different routes, you have to go by route numbers.

Ditto in Melbourne, particularly on trams. "City" on route 42/109 means
something different to "City" on route 48.
