Also possibly because delivery of new automobiles to WA from SA and
Eastern State manufacturing plants is primarily a one way traffic and
there would otherwise be unused total capacity (motorail and normal
freight service) on the return leg.

This used to be the case on Sydney-Brisbane, where it was MUCH cheaper
to ship a car by freight rail Brisbane to Sydney than vice versa.
