Re: Steam in Sydney underground

I don't think so. The North Shore goods trains used to work from Hornsby
down to St Leonards and back again in steam days (which lasted till about
1968, although I'm not suer of the exact date). In the 70s though the 48s
used to work from Hornsby through North SYdney, over the bridge and then
through the underground. This was not a regular occurance in steam days
though. Consultation of the Metropolitan Working Timetables (held in the
ARHS archives) will confirm this.

Most of the goods traffic was at Chatswood and St Leonards, although they
was a goods siding at Gordon too. St Leonards and Chatswood could be quite
busy yards. Hard to credit nowadays. And Chatswood had a separate parcels
office and parcel van road as well - that's right, two separate rail goods
services.
