Carriage Shed Demolition - Homebush

Another heritage railway building demolished ...

The long (saw-toothed) railway building on the down side of the line
between Strathfield and Homebush is currently being demolished. It was
built in the early 1900s as a carriage shed for the storage of loco
hauled suburban rolling stock. After the electrification of the
suburban network it was converted to classroom space, ending its days
as a TAFE college, conducting evening classes up until quite recently.

It was the last remaining carriage shed (for loco hauled stock) of its
type remaining on the NSW Railways. West Shed at Sydney Terminal was
the second last to go, last year.

The method of demolition has been to cut the building in half, long
ways, removing the half furthest away from the railway line first.

This is similar to how old picture theatres are demolished (Sydney
Regent etc). Remove everything except the street facade. By the time
you realise what is happening, it is too late!!
