AS to DAR rail note.

The Chief Minister of the NT, Denis Burke will be
officially opening the new Darwin East Arm Port
facility today, this is the one that is hoped will make
the new line viable.

In answer to an ABC radio reporter as to when the first
"peg" will happen for the new line, (the "peg" was
obviously meant to be spike which as most would know
happens when it is completed) anyhow the Chief said the
finances were still being worked on and there is now
some delay on contracts. He anticipates that work will
commence on a very small scale later this year and full
construction will be away next year.

Coinciding with the CM's statement was a press release
from the SA Premier making reference to further delays.
I was a little surprised to hear the CM say he was not
aware of the Premiers release and its details.

BTW, how do you have a golden spike on a concrete
sleeper track.? :)

Answer, you have a golden thermit weld ceremony, this
happened on the TAS line south of Alice Springs on the
3/10/1980 with all the available TAS construction crew.
