No. There have been proposals in recent years to upgrade it. The main
proposal is to convert it to light rail, and run the trams on-street
through the CBD  (the railway station is on the northern fringe of the
CBD) and perhaps even out to the hospital and the airport. However there
is no active work proceeding on this, as no funding exists in New
Zealand for such a project and there is no political will.
