VIC - Cut from Border mail, Alb/Wod - Saturday.

A NEW Wodonga railway station will be built on the new railway bypass near
Maloney Drive's intersection with the Hume Freeway.

Under the relocation plan, the old station will be part of the central
redevelopment area but is likely to be retained as an historic feature.

It has previously been proposed to create a new town square called Jack Hore
Place, between the station and Elgin St.

The present Jack Hore Place will be realigned to form an extension of Elgin
St next year, the whole street then being known as Elgin St.

Wodonga City Council general manager Mr Peter Marshall denied that Wodonga
would lose its railway station but said the city would get a better service.
Victoria intended to convert the broad gauge line to standard gauge,
allowing a twin line between Melbourne and Wodonga.

This would allow the XPT and Victoria passenger trains to stop in Wodonga as
well as Albury.

Victorian Transport Minister Mr Peter Batchelor said Victoria would start
talks with the Federal Government to improve services.
