A CityRail spokesperson recently said that there used to be 500
derailments a year 5 years ago, but the number is now much lower.
However, 5 years ago there was only State Rail. 

Now there is CityRail, CountryLink, RSA, FreightCorp, NRC, Silverton,
Patricks, Austrac, Northern Rivers, etc etc. Pointing the finger at
another operator is pointless. All the traffic is still running on the
same railway and the total number of derailments are no fewer than
they were 5 years ago.
