Speaking of Mr.Bent and his activities, I would suggest that he was
actually ahead of his time (and still is). Let's face it:
% He went into politics for profit.
% He realised that railways add economic value to land developments
near them.

Most modern politicians seem to be aware of the first point, but not
the second.

I am convinced that the Urban Land Corporation would have made far more
money from an electric railway running to Craigieburn, past Roxburgh
Park, Meadow Heights and Coolaroo from the extra money from increased
value of the land, the government consequerntly would have received
more stamp duty, etc than the cost of electrifying the EXISTING RAILWAY
within 15 minutes walk of most houses on those estates.

Of course, railways make losses...so the argument goes. Obviously
Thomas Bent didn't think so...
