I have just heard on the radio there has been a head on collision between
two freight trains at Waipahi, 500 kilometres south of Christchurch.
According to the report one Locomotive Engineer has been airlifted by rescue
helicopter to Dunedin Hospital which is approximately 100 kilometres north
of the scene of the collision. The other Loco Engineer is still trapped in
the wreckage and has stopped communicating with rescuers. He is feared dead.
THIS IS WHAT WAS REPORTED ON THE RADIO NEWS SO IT WILL BE UNCONFIRMED!
Both trains were operating under Track Warrant Control and were DOO.
Further news will be posted as it comes to hand.
Pictures and stories will no doubt be available in the following online
newspapers tomorrow:-
http://www.odt.co.nz (Otago Daily Times)
or
http://www.press.co.nz/ then click on Southland Times.
Regards
Deb (for John who is away)
