Aus loco discussion mailing list
I have recently enjoyed a 2 week holiday in the
South West of WA with my family and one of my holiday reading books was Peter
Attenborough's definitive book on the 35/45/600 classs.
A small point I want to take issue with, Peter, is
the list of 45s with Venturi exhausts. These exhausts made the locos sound like
something out of English Electric with a high pitched whistle.
One loco missing from your list was 4535. I have a
photo of it on Broadmeadow loco turntable being pushed by X218 on January 22
1971. At the time it was a BoCo as the third axle on the front long hood bogie
had been removed for attention. My photo shows a tapered exhaust.
Incidentally the Broadmeadow No1 turntable pit is
full of water as the Newcastle area had received 13" of rain in 24 hours! This
meant all trains in the Paterson-Maitland area were being hauled by 59s &
Garratts. Of note were 6009 on the Brisbane Limited and 5912 on the North Coast
Daylight!
The DL541 book is terrific for afficionados of
these locos and is highly recommended.
Regards
Noel Forster
