Can anyone confirm if this was the first time that a G
and/or X class has worked over the Blue Mountains?

Definitely the first X.
Not the first G. Several second contract "G2" series standard gauge
members worked to and from Clyde Engineering at Bathurst for post delivery
adjustments (they were of course built at Rosewater SA) and not forgetting
G517 and G518 which were joined at an early age and delivered via Broken
Hill to Sydney on the same train.
