The strong rumours regarding the EL's at the moment is that they are here to have their cabs appraised by the cab committee and then for Countrylink to check them out to see if they are suitable for hauling XPT's.

>From next February XP power cars are coming out of service 2 at a time for major overhauls and upgrading (including new donks). This programme is scheduled to take about 12 months to complete. So with that and the Olympics, the EL's could well be used by Countrylink.

XPT trailers have often been hauled by locos in the past as well as being hauled from Sydney Terminal to Sydenham by 7301 so there are no compatablity problems there.
