I suggest you better read the US "Trains" mag Sept 1999 P.86 which is a
good article on this very topic of storing / maintaining slides or pictures
of lcomotives [thus I managed to get the word "locomotive" into this very
much off topic thread.]
Don't do anything non reversable such as scanning pic or slides than
destroying the originals.
Backward compatibility of future computer systems is one of the problems the
mag article connects with a decision to go digital.
