Re: EE Locos and other things

Hello all

Regarding the narrow gauging of 500s- there was the suggestion during AN
days that a 500 could be modified to operate on the lightly trafficked
Peterborough-Orrooroo and Gladstone-Wilmington lines.This was reported in
Catchpoint or the Recorder. As far as I know, this did not occur, or if it
did it went unreported. It does seem unlikely though.

There was a photo published in the Recorder in 1980-81 of an NT on a set of
4 axle (500 ?) trucks on Gladstone turntable. Pretty sure it wasn't
operating on them- it was probably being moved around while its trucks were
worked on- or maybe the 4 axle trucks were used to tow the unit between
Gladstone and Peterborough.

TGR Xs and Ys didn't operate that well together, apparently the XA
modification was to improve their MU performance with Ys.

I wonder if the Tranzrail 'Arataki' system might be of interest to Tasrail,
which is still heavily reliant on a fleet of Z, ZA and ZB EE types, but
which is getting a couple more GM rebuilds of similar power to its EEs.

In the small book, 'Rails to the Top End', there are photos of an NJ coupled
back to back with an NT on a train- the 'Chaser' which followed the Ghan, I
think. I'd always assumed from this that NJs might have had the ability to
work with NTs- but the combo probably occurred due to a breakdown or loco
balancing requirements.

Cheers

Ben
