[Ausloco] Re smaller engine leading larger one
Ausloco mailing list,
Good freezing morning everyone,
I stil disagree with Eddie on some points:
* 36 + 38 on the main south.
The 38 was the train engine from Sydney. The 36 pilot came on at Goulburn for the 1 in 40s south of there. For expediency, the bank engine was placed in the lead so as to save time at the uncoupling point.
You can split hairs if you like with the "short distance"!
I also saw this on the Central West Express with the 36 leading the 38 from Bathurst because the 36 was light attached from Bathurst to Orange.
* 30T + 32 on the Mudgee line. On freight trains grade control valves were used to control the speed on falling grades so that is why you could see a smaller loco leading a larger one. My comments referred to passenger trains and I have already mentioned this anomoly with freight trains.
30T + 32 combination on this line was a rarity rather than common place as you mentioned.
* 59 + Standard Goods. This is splitting hairs as both are of fairly equivalent power rating and 59s and standards worked turn about on the same jobs on the north because of this.
At Gosford with double smalls, sometimes it was the order which the engines came out of loco that determined the order on the train, particularly when both had auto couplers.
Finally, I think this topic has had enough airing on Ausloco and perhaps it might be better to close it now in everyones interests.
Via my pocketmail,
Regards,
Peter Booth
