Just to refine a previous posting about having the smaller steam
locomotive leading so as not to "overload" the smaller one:
A major reason was that it was believed that the smaller loco usually
had the more restrained operating conditions (especially re speed and
the ability to keep adequate water in the boiler), so that if the crew
on the smaller loco had control of the brakes, they could easily keep
the whole train within the required speeds etc. However if the lead loco
was the larger one, the crew might forget (intentionally or
accidentally) that they had a smaller loco trailing, in which case the
only recourse available to the crew of the smaller loco would be to be
vigorous with the whistle or (in extreme cases) to cut in the brake
isolating cock and do something drastic.
