There has been a lot more of this sort of thing in recent times, i.e.
smaller locos leading. Standard practice used to be for the larger loco to
lead as it had better brakes.

A classic recent example was T373 leading two ELs. This was most bizarre as
the T doesn't have dynamic brakes.
