The ALCO DL541 book states,
the BU's where converted to A1A-A1A
and also
"The ALF class locomotives are fitted with AR10-D14 generators which supply
enough power not only to drive the six traction motors fitted to each ALF but to
provide a surplus. It is this surplus power which is used to drive the four
traction motors fitted to the BU class. These motors have a total power output
of 1340kW"
