RE: [Ausloco] And the 422,s.

Hi Matthew: what you say is quite correct and which I was alluding to without the detail hence my use of 'relatively' in describing the simpler repairs. This happened quite frequently in steam days - some classes were notorious for cracking frames, particularly from the horncheek corners. Even the cast steel AD60 garratt frames weren't immune from cracking.

Hi

Repairing a loco frame is just not that simple. It
depends on the nature of the fracture and the type of
material used in the frames construction. Engineers
need to be consulted to ensure that correct procedure
is followed. Quite often welding produces secondary
hardening in the weld zone meaning that in the future
the frame could fail extremely rapidly with no
warning.

With proper precautions, a sucessful repair could be
made but economic factors may be important in this
case. However if repaired the frame may still fell the
accelerated effects of fatigue causing more cracking.
An example of this is X35, rolled at Glenorchy approx
1970, repaired and in traffic until approx 1995.
Withdrawn again to due fatigue cracking of the frame.
Although ASR wouldn't expect this long in service I
hope.

Hope this is of interest to some of you.
