RE: [Ausloco] ASR 422s

Friday (5/5/2000): Wet wet wet....

We saw 42210 / 42219 / 8042 / 8032 / 48153 shunting at West Tamworth around midday. When finished, they moved the load back into the platform road to do the brake test and awaiting line clearance. Interesting sounds from the two GM's vs the two big Alcos (48153 was rather quiet!).

We then went to Werris Creek: all the stored 422's were standing in lines around the workshop roads with 42201 the only one inside the depot, having its roadworthyness checks completed. We were told that they had to be off the property by the 10th May and they would all go in one movement, possibly with two active locos at each end (top and and tail) - that would imply the possible use of 42220 & 42203 as well as 10 & 19. They were sorry to see the 422's going, feeling that they hadn't been given a decent chance to get stuck into repairing some of the units for local use - it would appear that the class was popular around the 'Creek whereas the 80 class are not.

It looked like the two GM's (10 & 19) were being given a road trial as they were due to be detached when the train arrived at the 'Creek later that afternoon - 8113 was sent out to the sidings to take their place. When the train finally arrived, mid-afternoon, the two 80's were leading the 422's ...

The only locos around the turntable were four 80 class (27, 3, 50, 24), 44209 and three 48's, one of which was providing air for a jack hammer as work was being done on the turntable surrounds. John Currey's 4465 was on its siding - alongside was part of the nose of another 44 (original livery). Four Mk.1 48's: 28 (rev), 41 (candy), 37 (red), 19 (red) were lined up on an adjacent road in various states of disarray.

8006 / 22 / 14 / 28 / 34 were coupled together on a siding, as were 44204 / 6 / 32 / 8. On the same siding, a hired road crane was assiting with the scrapping of numerous NOFF / NOHF ore wagons (is this a case of lose the traffic therefore scrap the wagons???). There were plenty of NGMA grain wagons nearby also.

Subject:	[Ausloco] ASR 422s

ASR have confirmed through other sources that they have purchased
16 members of the 422 class. The full list is
42201,04,05,07,08,09,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18 and 19. I am told it is
most likely they will depart Werris Creek on Wednesday (sorry don't know
the time) and ASR have been advised they will be at Broken Hill on 16
May for onward movement to SA. The first storage point in SA is likely
to be Islington. 42210 may undertake some trial runs in SA shortly after
arrival.
No contract has been let at present for their refurbishment. This
will follow after the condition of all the units has been fully
evaluated. It may also be that not all are rebuilt. Initially ASR are
talking about getting eight active units form the sixteen. 42210 and 19
are confirmed as operable and will be used to deliver the whole lot.
Cheers
Bob
