HTV 2000: This vehicle was released to traffic mid August 89, after being
built from the bodys of 4715 and 4719. The reason for the rebuild was for
testing freight trains that were in excess of 6000 tonnes which were a bit
much for the Dynamometer car (DMC 1902) to handle. Inside it was fitted
with a diesel generator set that was salvaged from a loco hauled car from
the Illawarra, and had the centre section where the engine previously was,
filled with plate steel to bring the units weight up to 61 tonnes. It was
orgionally released to traffic numbered HTV 1108, which was the last four
digits of the testing depts phone number. It was later re numbered HTV
2000.
There was a rumour that the unit did find its was to Melbourne on one of
its south line trials, but l can neither confirm or deny this
Tongala Crash: On the news tonight it showed footage of it. The G is very
much on its side, the second unit, X39, was sitting at about a 45 degree
angle to the running line, with the back bogie ripped from under it and
sitting beside it. The truck driver claimed to have had his vision
obscured by fog, which there was at the time, but it didn't seem that thick
that you wouldn't see the trains head/fog lights. He claimed to have seen
it and then attempted to speed up when he realised he wasn't going to make
it. There was no mention at all made of the train drivers involved, just
how lucky the truck driver was, who was on his way from Colac to Brisbane.
The news also said that extra trains will now have to run via Bendigo till
the line is re opened !!
SG Grain: G528 departed Dunolly this arvo at 15 40 with 20 wheat vehicles,
none of which were green.
