Re: Echuca sightings

Aus loco discussion mailing list

G'day all,

Last Monday evening saw 9083 goods ex Melb. arrive with the usual G class (no. unsighted) + A71 in the shafts rather than the usual X class.

A71 did not run the 0500 hrs ex Echuca to Moulamein on Tues as the job was "blown out". However, it did run the p.m. job to Deniliquin that day. It returned to Melb. on 9084 behind an unknown G class Tues night.

This morning (Thur), sees a forlorn-looking X32 (can't be far away from an FA "paint-job") at rest in Echuca yard as, again, no Moulamein job ran today (see below). The Deniliquin job runs in the afternoon as it mainly returns loaded containers with bagged export rice to Echuca/Melb ex the Denilquin Rice Mill. This Mill receives its "paddy rice" mostly by road.

As an aside to the "non-working" of regularly tabled Moulamein line trains, it appears that the Echuca Rice Mill is light-on for export bagged rice orders at present. Reduced shifts are being worked by Echuca Mill workers until the order book fills once again. This reflects on the need to run Moulamein trains as they predominately, pick up rice in hoppers en route ex numerous silos and deliver daily to the Echuca Mill for processing. When working at full capacity (24 hour round-the-clock shifts), the Echuca Mill can process around 750 to 800 tonnes of bulk "paddy" rice per day into bags, into containers and onto trains. The current production rate could be less than half that!
