G'day All,
Further loco news associated with the
"Trains to Paddlesteamers" story of yesterday...
Informed sources tell me
that:
1. West
Coast's Y class 0-6-0 is planned to travel to Echuca on or about 14 April.
Unknown whether light engine or otherwise, however, it would remain in Echuca
until at least after the "Steam, Horse & Vintage Rally" on the
June Queens' birthday long weekend (10th, 11th & 12th). If demand warrants,
local runs may occur at short notice ex Echuca to say, Rochester and/or Barnes
or maybe Deniliquin between April & mid - June. The loco MAY be housed in the engine shed. This would
require track to be relaid in from the present turntable to the three-road shed
and two roads may be relaid initially.
The local body that sub-leases the
engine shed has received a grant of $300,000 to repair the sheds' slate roof. No
work has started as yet.
2. R711
may be used more often than the planned "last Sunday of the month"
trips ex Melbourne if demand for "Trains to Paddlesteamers" warrants.
Bookings for next months trip are currently good!
3. The
Port of Echuca owned A2 996 may end up in the engine shed too! However, the deal
is that it can only leave the Port Of Echuca Wharf BY RAIL !
This obviously necessitates the restoration of the 800
metres of track to the Port Wharf. A2 996 stands at the Wharf now.
It
is planned to fully restore A2 996 to mainline running... eventually. It can be
steamed currently!
By
the way, R711 ran yesterdays' 370 tonne train from Melb to Bendigo to the
times set for an R class hauling 200 tonnes over that route. It is doubtful that
a `standard' (I.e. unmodified) coal burning R class could do
that!
Look out "Eighters" when they dare to venture south over
Easter! R711 is awaiting! And that from a boy who was born and
raised in
Sydney!
See Ya
AH
