Hello everyone,

To expand on the issue of the reduced number of 80 class in service, a
contact has told me that only 9 x 80 class are to be retained in traffic.
The balance are being stored at Lithgow, available for traffic at short
notice. The nine comprised six (6) units for use on the sandstone trains and
three (3) for Werris Creek banking duties. He advised that eight (8) x 82
and six (6) x 81 class locos were surplus due to a temporary downturn in
coal demand from the Hunter valley mines.

He also advised that six(6) out of the 12 x 86 class in service were also to
be stored.

Some recent trains of interest which I don't think have been reported were:

    * In December while the 80 class were away banking a train over Ardglen,
another set of bankers were required. An 82 and two 48s were quickly put
together and banked a wheat train over the range.

    * 442s5 and an NR worked a metropolitan trip train a few weeks ago
during the very early hours, he could not give me a date for this.

    * Due to difficulties in obtaining a path from Port Botany to Cooks
River, trains are often combined. For example, a few weeks back during the
early morning hours FreightCorp and Austrac combined with 3 x81s, an 82 and
the 18 class at the head of a train. At Cooks they were split of course.

Cheers,
Greg Travers.
