re Jolimont Pilots

According to my note books for the period The Princes Bridge pilot was
crewed by a Fireman from Sth Dynon and a spark driver from the Electric
running depot. The shift I seemed to be rostered for around 1968 appears to
have been a 2:00pm sign on with a finish at 10:38pm except Mondays when it
was an 11:00am start for a 7:00pm finish.
Invariably around July - Sept of this year it was invariably E 1105. The Am
shift was a 4:30am start with a finish time of 12:30pm.
There was at this time a second pilot for which Dynon fireman were
regularily rostered and that was the Scrap pilot. over this period my log
books show E1104 performing these duties.
All E class were maintained and based at the E.R.D. Jolimont Workshops, and
of course performed a lot of the suburban goods trip running in those days.
( This is from memory I seem to recall that when there was a shortage of
E.R.D. drivers to roster on the Princes Bridge Pilot it was a common
practice to utilise Dynon drivers who were at that time not qualified for
the "butterbooxes"and then an F class would be utilised especially on
Saturdays.....Again from memory but in the early seventies there seemed to
be an increasing use of F class locos on the Princes Bridge Pilot.)
The firemans seat on an E was on a wooden box there was from memory often
no back support, very uncomfortable
Hope this is of some interest
