Port Lincoln Report (from Bruce Mead)

Aus loco discussion mailing list

This is a little bit late, but Bruce Mead has provided an "eyewitness"
account of the last workings for the season to Kapinnie, SA, in addition to
the information already provided by Ivan. Bruce has asked me to forward it
to the List.

Regards,

Paul

The LAST train to Kapinnie (6001) left Port Lincoln around noon Friday 17
March as NJ6 + 865 + NJ3, arriving at Yeelanna about 1330. It dropped half
the wagons at Yeelanna, departing for Kapinnie at 1415. I don't know what
happened after that as I left it about 12kms from Yeelanna as it headed
into the gloom of a charcoal sky.

In addition to the Kapinnie working, there were two other workings that
day. A 'train' ran to Kimba with NJ5 + NJ1 + NJ4 departing Pt Lincoln at
0415 arriving at Ungarra at 0725 to drop half its load (around 18 wagons).
It continued to Wharminda where it dropped the remained of its load. The
units then ran light to Kimba to pick up about a dozen wagons - eight
having been fitted with the new roll-top covers (according to the driver,
these mods are done by an engineering company in Kimba).

I photographed the three NJs dead at Kimba at 1730 waiting for the crew to
sign on for the return working - which would have had over 50 wagons on
arrival in PL that night.

The other train ran to Poochera departing Pt Lincoln at 1020 with DA7 +871
+ 872. I don't know what happened en route but assume it also split it
load along the way.

 Thanks ... Bruce
