Actually 156.M sounds very familiar ... as does the livery ... and the two
raised pantographs. You are probably quite correct.

I very rairly saw V.56 except when I travelled on the Sandringham line which
passed quite close to the workshops. The V was a funny, dinky looking
machine ... actually she didn't look too bad. The lads at the CME office
came up with something quite pleasing. I was always curious as to the number
#56. Why so high? Was it numbered after the X class sequence which finished
at 55?

It looked like it couldn't pull anything to save itself ... but she was
geared to travel at a very s  l  o  w  speed to enable spark sets to be
hauled through the wash.

I am curious as to how far the venerable Swingdoor pilots were allowed to
venture from the safety of Jolimont yard. I know Es or in later years Ys,
etc were used on transfer shunts between Newport and Jolimont. Interestingly
the Gippsland passenger yard (on the NE end of the yard) pilot was an E  ...
I'm surprised that the Swingdoors never performed these shunts to/from
Flinders Street.
