Orange, 20/3

Aus loco discussion mailing list

A busy evening in Orange last night: I turned my scanner on after
arriving home from yet another 14-hour day at work, just in time to hear
the driver of 8137 (train 9186?) repeating his train order back to
control for a run to Dubbo. I raced trackside at 2046 just as the train
complete message was called through - I missed seeing what it was:
probably empty grain hoppers, and almost certainly multi locos.

8255 had just arrived from Dubbo with the oil train (8126), and
collected some more tanks (shunted 2045-2107). Usually, the loco(s)
drop their loading and run light to collect tanks, adding them to the
front of the consist. This train performed the shunt with most of its
loading still attached. It departed to Sydney at 2111 as 8255 / tank /
open wagon with containers / 9 flats with containers / 10 tanks.

Minutes later (2120), train 8972 rolled in from Manildra; 8150 / 8148 /
19 (?) Manildra hoppers. The crew were changed at East Fork; the train
departed at 2127.

As this rolled out of sight, the Indian Pacific crept in: NR45 /
motorail with 2 cars / 16 carriages. This pulled up at East Fork at
2136 to collect two passengers, and departed moments later.

Four trains in less than an hour: one each to and from Dubbo; one each
to and from the Parkes line. Not bad for quiet little Orange!
