Re: [ALLSTAFF] FW: Virus Warning and this no is no joke sent to me from some one that works for optus
Aus loco discussion mailing list
I'm sorry, but I get sick and tired of recieving virus warnings that are
forward by a friend who recieved it from a friend who got it from someone
who they know who works for a major organisation.
It seems that 80% of virus warnings are a hoax anyway... just check out any
of the Urban Legends websites. So that leaves us with 20% of possibly true
warnings.... so how can you tell what is true and what is not?
The viruses and 'dangerous' site described in the originating email can be
avoided by simply having good quality virus protection with up to date
pattern updates. How do I know?..... I've just completed an assignment
where I've had to look at different packages and evaluate each against the
others and what I learned was that most packages will protect you against
viruses and macros, malicious websites and check over your email and
downloading as long as you keep the virus pattern updated. I also learned
that most of the good ones will look for suspicous virus like activitiy and
report back to you *even if they can't identfy the virus*. I also learned
that the top virus companies are happy for you to send them a copy of
suspcious files and if it is a virus will send you a fix within a day.
So if you get a virus warning from a friend, who recieved it from a friend,
who got it from someone who works for a major organisation.. check it out
before forwarding it on to everyone in your address book. Have a look at
the websites of some of the major antivirus software vendors e.g
http://www.antivirus.com http://www.mcafee.com http://www.symantec.com if
your warning is correct then feel free to forward it to people who have
contact with on the net if you really must. But if it's not true ... consign
it to the trash along with the warnings about kidney stealing rackets, or
forwarded messages about winning a holiday thanks to Bill.
