The photo shows the 3 locos with the head board "BY RAIL across
AUSTRALIA"
on the front, and a distinguished looking gentleman in a dark suit and
banded hat standing by the buffers. Off to the side stand a group of
well
wishers and a cameraman. Barely visible because of the angle of the
shot,
painted on the side of 42102 are some words "....? from? EAST to? WEST"
Was anyone there?
Rob
Yes, I was and it cost me $20 to get the shot, a princely sum in those
days representing a day without pay doing Xmas holidays casual job.
42102 the leading loco had a crest on the nose with the words 'BY RAIL
ACROSS AUSTRALIA".
The sides of the first two locos carried a sign
RAIL LINKS THE NATION'S COASTS
FROM
EAST to WEST
The locos were swapped at Canterbury for 4608, 4609 and 4610 with all
three 46s having the sign affixed to their sides.
The train (261 West) was spilt in two (261 and 263) at Penrith for the
climb up the mountains.
I'll put them on The Mainliners Gallery at some stage.
